General purpose servers

There are a number of servers available for general use, both for large computational jobs and for remote access. If you need to run software that takes not seconds but hours, days or weeks to complete, and makes a normal machine run horribly slowly, then you should probably use one or more of the compute servers. (Please note that in order to run jobs for longer than 18 hours, you will need to use the longjob command).
Computationally-intensive jobs might also benefit from use of the Beowulf and Hadoop clusters (see the Cluster Computing page for more information).
The external login page explains how to use ssh to login to the ssh gateway machines from outside the Informatics network.
A list of externally accessible and general compute servers is below:
Server alias | Purpose | Availability |
---|---|---|
staff.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk | Externally accessible ssh gateway ONLY - not for computational jobs | Staff and PhD students |
student.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk | Externally accessible ssh gateway ONLY - not for computational jobs | UG and MSc students |
staff.xrdp.inf.ed.ac.uk | Externally accessible graphical login service - not for computational jobs | Staff and PhD students |
staff.compute.inf.ed.ac.uk | Computational jobs | Staff and PhD students |
student.compute.inf.ed.ac.uk | Computational jobs | UG and MSc students |
