OpenVPN FAQ

This page contains some questions and answers specifically aimed at our local OpenVPN setup. The Official FAQ and documents linked from it contain more general information which may help resolve problems.

OpenVPN authentication

Our standard configuration files connect to the endpoints in password-authentication mode. By default you should use your normal DICE username and password for this.

OpenVPN for Linux and *BSD

OpenVPN has been tested and works well on Linux, and should work on *BSD.

OpenVPN for macOS

To use the Informatics OpenVPN service, your Mac will need OpenVPN software and some Informatics configuration files.

Download and install Tunnelblick

For Macs we suggest Tunnelblick OpenVPN software. Their page Downloading and Installing Tunnelblick explains how to install it.

Please read their Privacy and Security document, and consider whether Tunnelblick's default settings are to your liking.

OpenVPN configuration files

The available Informatics client configuration consists of several short files, described below, which you should download and save as appropriate for your system. If you have AFS available you can copy these directly from /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/inf-unit/OpenVPN/Config/; if not, you can download them from here (we recommend that you right-click on the individual links and 'save link as'). You may also find that emailing the files to yourself as attachments works as a way to download them to phones or other similar devices.

If there are platform-specific versions of the configurations you should use those in preference to the generic versions, as there may be additional tweaks intended to improve your experience.
