Restrictions on encryption

Many countries allow you to bring portable devices through border controls unchallenged, but some countries restrict the use of encryption.

Attempting to take encrypted data or devices to these countries without a licence can result in:

  • the device being confiscated
  • other penalties including imprisonment

Borrow a clean Windows laptop

You can borrow a non-encrypted Windows laptop from the University's Clean Laptops Service. For details see Working while travelling, especially Before you go.

Borrow a clean Mac laptop

Informatics has a few non-encrypted MacBooks which can be borrowed for use in these countries. These MacBooks are a few years old. To borrow one, ask online or come to room 2.07 in the Informatics Forum.
