Enabling desktop icons
Some Gnome users will be accustomed to having icons appear on their desktop and will notice with the Ubuntu platform that this is no longer the default behaviour. To restore the feature you need to run the "Gnome Tweaks" application and enable the "Desktop icons" extension. The easiest way to do that would be to press the "Windows" button and type "tweak". The screenshot below shows the option enabled.
