Java

Supported Versions

We support multiple versions and distribution of Java (both the JVM runtime ("JRE") and development tools "JDK"). Here's a summary of the versions to be found on DICE:

Maple

What is Maple?

Maple is a Computer Algebra system developed by Maplesoft which is provided for use on DICE systems.

Currently we carry only one version of Maple - a perpetually-licensed version 9. Maple 9 is available for unlimited use on DICE, though it is now very old and cannot be supported.

See the Licensed Software page for more details on licensed software.

LaTeX

LaTeX is a document preparation system.

It's on DICE machines, with custom document classes for the School of Informatics.

Or you can use Overleaf, a collaborative online LaTeX service. Overleaf has lots of help for beginners.

Can I be given root / sudo access?

No, but on DICE it is likely you will be able to get by without it. Please see our Frequently-Asked Question covering this topic.

Projects

Projects in Informatics: disambiguation page

There are several types of project within informatics:

Computing Projects

Development work within Informatics Computing of more than a few days effort is generally managed as specific projects. Any user can request a project. Once requested a project is reviewed as soon as possible. If approved it will then be queued waiting for assignment to relevant computing staff when effort has been made available.

Intel compilers

Intel Compilers are available for personal and self-managed computers, for various non-commercial uses. For details see Intel's Free Software Tools page.

On DICE Ubuntu Focal machines, an up-to-date Intel MKL is provided by Ubuntu.

Laboratory Examinations

Laboratory Examinations are no longer available

The (DICE SL7) laboratory examination system is no longer maintained. "Online" exams have largely removed to remote platforms. If you need advice please contact the Research and Teaching Unit (covering laboratory exam technology) / Learning Technology (covering online / remote examination).

ISDD

The Informatics Software Download Database (ISDD) is a utility to help academics and students assign appropriate licences, often some form of open source licence, for their software. It is not intended to be a SourceForge-style utility for code management – it is simply a software repository like FTP.

The database is also a way for the School to keep track of download activity so that it may be claimed in the research excellence framework. If your software is not in the ISDD, download activity will not make it into that assessment.

Python

Python versions

Typically several versions of Python are supported - and provided - on DICE. The default (as invoked by the python command) will be whatever is provided as standard for the distribution. Here's a summary of installed versions:

Installing software yourself on DICE

This document will always be a work in progress as we try to keep up-to-date with the latest frameworks. If you think we could add any new software or useful tips, please get in touch using the contact form.
