Suspension of Inactive DICE Accounts

In Informatics we operate an inactivity suspension policy for all DICE accounts. Any account which has not successfully authenticated within the last 180 days will be suspended and the user will be notified of this suspension by email. An account in this state cannot be used until the suspension is reversed. This can be done only by computing support staff.

A newly created account will have 45 days to authenticate using the initial password before being eligible for inactivity checks. This effectively means that a new account must be authenticated within 45 days of the initial password being set, or will be suspended.

User accounts which are inactive present an increased security risk to our systems. Firstly, the greater the number of user accounts, the greater the number of accounts which can potentially be hacked. Secondly, any compromise of an inactive account is much less likely to be detected by the user.
