Printing from Windows

To find out information about a printer's name, location and model, visit the webpage list of staff printers for staff and postgrads or list of printers for undergrad and taught students.

Please note that printing is only available when connected to the school's cabled network and not from Eduroam wireless unless you have the Informatics OpenVPN installed and connected.

Setting Up Printers on Windows 7 and Windows 8

Undergrad and taught students should replace infcups with atkrbcups in the instructions below.

Xerox MultiFunction Devices (MFDs)

  1. For the Xerox MFD printers, download Xerox Global Print Driver. Choose your Operating System version and make sure you select the PostScript driver.
  2. Accept the End User Licence Agreement, and Run. Accept the default installation location as C:/Xerox, click Install. Wait a few moments and the Add New Printer Wizard will launch, otherwise launch manually via Start menu-> Printers -> Add Printer.
  3. In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
  4. On the Choose a network printer page, Windows will attempt to search for available printers. Stop this search by clicking on The printer I want isn't listed
  5. On the next page, in the box for Select a shared printer by name enter
    http://infcups.inf.ed.ac.uk:631/printers/printername replacing 'printername' with the name of the printer (e.g. if536c0). Click Next
  6. You will then be prompted to search for a printer driver for the printer - click OK
  7. When you are prompted to select a manufacturer and model, click Have Disk and Browse to the GPD_PS_64_Driver.inf (Win7 64-bit) folder where the x2UNIVP.inf file will be located, click Open, click OK select Xerox GPD PS V3.0, click OK
  8. Once the printer has installed, it is important to set the properties. Go to Start menu-> Printers, right-click on the Xerox printer, select Printer Properties
  9. Click Administration tab and under Configuration change Basic Printing Mode to Xerox Workcentre Color click OK. Return to Printer Properties and under Configuration tab, change Installable Options Paper Tray to '5 trays', and check that Office Finisher is selected. This means if you wish to print an A3 file you will be able to select tray 4
  10. You can now print a test page for the printer.

HP LaserJet printers

  1. For HP monochrome printers, e.g. LaserJet 4200, 4300, P4015 download HP Universal Print Driver for Windows - Postscript for your operating system. Make sure you select the PS (PostScript) version of the driver.
  2. For Colour LaserJet 4600 (at9c in Appleton Tower Level 7) use the WinXP+Vista download, as there are no specific drivers for Win7/8. Link to HP Color LaserJet 4600 64-Bit PostScript Driver.
  3. Take a note of the installation location e.g. C:\HP Universal Print Driver\ so you can find it again
  4. Click the Start button, to go to Devices and Printers. Click Add a printer. (In Windows 8 this can be found under Settings -> Control Panel)
  5. In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
  6. On the Choose a network printer page, Windows will attempt to search for available printers. Stop this search by clicking on The printer I want isn't listed
  7. On the next page, in the box for Select a shared printer by name enter
    http://infcups.inf.ed.ac.uk:631/printers/printername replacing 'printername' with the name of the printer (e.g. if513m0). Click Next
  8. You will then be prompted to search for a printer driver for the printer - click OK.
  9. When you are asked to select a manufacturer and model, click Have Disk and Browse to the folder it was installed in e.g. C:\HP Universal Print Driver\
  10. For double-sided printing, you need to check the Duplex Unit is 'installed'. Once the printer has finished installing, go to Devices and Printers right-click on the printer icon and select 'Printer Properties'. From the 'Device settings' tab, scroll down under Installable Options, check that Duplex Unit is 'installed', apply and ok. Then right-click on the printer icon again and select 'Two-sided (duplex printing)'.
  11. You can now print a test page for the printer.
