The EU's General Data Processing Regulation ("GDPR") comes into effect on 25th May 2018. This page collects together links to some useful GDPR resources.

The GDPR was originally published in May 2016 in the Official Journal of the European Union. It contains 99 Articles and 173 associated Recitals. Many of the principles are the same as or very similar to the current Data Protection Act 1998, but there is much more emphasis now placed on process and documentation.

The following may be useful when thinking about the GDPR:

  • CSCE reference material.

  • The University's GDPR pages.

  • The Information Commissioner's Office ("the ICO") has issued an overview to highlight "the key themes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to help organisations understand the new legal framework in the EU. It explains the similarities with the existing UK Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), and describes some of the new and different requirements. It is for those who have day-to-day responsibility for data protection." There's also separate guidance as to what to expect when from the ICO.

  • The ICO's "12 steps to take now".

  • The Irish Data Protection Commissioner has also produced a guidance document.

  • The Article 29 Working Party's site is being revamped, but still contains useful links.

  • wikipedia article.

  • The JISCMail data-protection list's home page links to the archive of postings.

  • The MRC's GDPR resources for researchers.

  • "Bird&Bird's guide to the General Data Protection Regulation seeks to summarise the key changes that the new law will bring and to highlight the most important actions which organisations should take in preparing to comply with it."

  • Act Now Training's blog article summarising the Data Protection Bill after its first reading. They also have an index page for all of their GDPR blog articles.

  • Qualsys's 10 Essential GDPR Resources.

  • A cross reference to the GDPR.

  • Another summary.
