Dealing with winmail.dat

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

When mail has been sent from a Microsoft mailer such as Outlook or Exchange Server, attachments to messages can sometimes be encoded in a proprietary Microsoft format (called TNEF) in a file called winmail.dat or win.dat. Many mailers need extra help in order to unpack such attachments.

If you use Thunderbird

Install the LookOut plugin. This makes Thunderbird able to unpack winmail.dat attachments.

If you read mail on DICE

Use the tnef command to unpack winmail.dat attachments. For more details type:

man tnef

In other cases

The Wikipedia page on TNEF suggests, for a number of platforms, software which will unpack winmail.dat files.
