Printing from MacOS X

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

To configure your Mac to use the Informatics printers you must either be connected to the school's cabled network or connected to the Informatics OpenVPN service.

Recent releases of OS X have led to some confusion about how printer drivers should be installed with the HP website advising that all printer drivers should now be installed via the Apple software update utility. This will not work with the DICE printing setup. if you have updated your Mac to 10.9 Mavericks or 10.10 Yosemite from a previous release of OS X, any previously installed printers will continue to work and you need take no action. If you have a fresh install of OS X 10.9 or 10.10, follow the instructions below:

To use the Xerox multi-function devices you should first install the appropriate driver listed below. OS X 10.7 Lion already has drivers for our HP printers. OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite users will need to download the HP driver bundle also listed below.

Printer Installation

  1. Make sure that your Mac is connected to the school's cabled network or connected to the Informatics OpenVPN service.
  2. Make sure that you have already installed the appropriate printer drivers listed below.
  3. Open "System Preferences".
  4. Choose "Print & Scan".
  5. Click on + to add a printer.
  6. Click on the "IP" globe to select a CUPS printer.
  7. Set the details as follows:
    • Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)
    • Address: infcups.inf.ed.ac.uk
    • Queue: printers/printername (e.g. printers/if513m1). A list of all printers, including location can be found at: http://infcups.inf.ed.ac.uk:631/printers/
    • Name, e.g. if513m1
    • Location: e.g. "IF-5.13"
    • Print Using: Click on the menu and choose "Select Printer Software" and select the driver. Typing eg. 7535 or P4010 in the Filter box will make the selection easier. Click OK.
  8. Click 'Add', if it says it can't find the printer, do Continue and wait until the Setting up menu appears.
  9. For setting up the Xeroxes set Paper Trays to 5 Trays and Finisher to Office Finisher LX, click OK.
  10. For HPs set e.g. duplex unit, click OK.
  11. Your printer should now be available.

Printer Software (Drivers)

  • HP LaserJet (P401x, 42xx, 43xx, 46xx series): These Informatics LaserJet and Color LaserJet printers are already supported by OS X 10.7 Lion. On 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite, first install the HP printer driver package.

When installing as above, choose the appropriate driver from the 'Select Printer Software...' driver selection.

  • Xerox MFD Printers: From the Xerox website download the Mac OS X Print Driver Installer Package 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, clicking on the 'accept' button for the licence.
This will download a disk image.
Open the disk image and run the installer.
    Accept the licence.
Click on Install to accept the default filesystem 'Destination'.
Type in your password to start the installation.
At the Select Printer stage the installer will search for a connected printer.
Press continue to cancel the search.
Press continue again to "continue installing the software without a printer connection".
Once the installation succeeds click close.
When you later configure individual Xerox printers you will be able to select the correct driver.
These drivers will work for Mac OS 10.7 and newer. For Mac OS 10.6, use this package instead.

Xerox notes

Under Mac-OS 10.7, when sending a job to a Xerox printer, all the preamble files the driver sends to the printer will appear in the print queue. The outcome of this is that it look like you have sent 7 jobs to the queue rather than one. This is a known bug which will hopefully be fixed in due course.
