SL7 and evolution

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

The mail application evolution is available on SL7.

Rename ~/.evolution

Anyone who has used evolution on SL6 should take the following action before trying to use it on SL7. Failure to do this will make evolution produce "mbox format conversion" errors, instead of mail.

cd
mv .evolution old-dot-evolution

That is, rename your ~/.evolution directory. Having done that, it should be safe to start evolution.

Kill processes

If you have already started evolution and you have "mbox format" conversion errors, kill all "evolution" processes then try running evolution again.
A simple way to get rid of any evolution processes is to reboot the machine. If that is not an option - for instance on a shared machine - then processes can be killed as follows. Open a Terminal window and type this command:

ps x | grep evolution

That command might produce output similar to this:

23429 ? SLl 0:00 /usr/libexec/evolution-source-registry
23447 pts/2 Sl 0:00 /usr/libexec/evolution/3.12/evolution-alarm-notify
23454 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/libexec/evolution-calendar-factory
24250 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep evolution

Ignoring the grep line, note the numbers at the start of each line of output, and append them to a kill command. In this example you would type:

kill 23429 23447 23454

Then type

ps x | grep evolution

once more, just to check that all evolution processes have gone. Then, having renamed ~/.evolution, it should be safe to start evolution.
